New Jersey After 3 and Enterprise Rent-A-Car Team Up
to Kick Off Semester of Service with Multiple Book Drives
Celebrating MLK Day
New Jersey After 3 is the lead agency for Semester of Service in New Jersey
New Brunswick, NJ – January 18, 2010 –New Jersey After 3, a statewide network of afterschool programs dedicated to expanding learning time for thousands of New Jersey’s youth is proud to announce the official kick-off to this year’s Semester of Service in New Jersey through a book drive supported by forty Enterprise Rent-A-Car locations. Over the past few weeks, forty Enterprise Rent-A-Car locations in New Jersey have participated in their first annual MLK – New Jersey After 3 book drive. Employees and customers have donated books, new or used, geared towards the 1st-8th grade reading level.
During this week honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., January 18th – 22nd, volunteers from the forty Enterprise Rent-A-Car branches have brought donated books to four designated New Jersey After 3 after-school programs: two sites in Lakewood, and two sites in Perth Amboy (locations listed below). In addition to distributing the donated books to students, volunteers from Enterprise participated in the launching activities of the Semester of Service “Speak Out & Listen Up” campaign – a 13 week long curriculum that will allow 4,500 students and 2,000 family and community members within the New Jersey After 3 network to reflect on the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., while exploring their own voices to assist in creating communities that support and celebrate literacy development, and hope and peace.
“Enterprise Rent-A-Car is proud to be a part of the official start to New Jersey After 3’s Semester of Service,” stated Douglas V. Lopez – Business Rental Sales Executive and Spokesperson for Enterprise. “Our book drive is just the beginning of a project where students will identify and work to solve problems in their communities. We’re proud to be aligned with an organization like New Jersey After 3 who’s Semester of Service project is helping to open kids eyes to the power of literacy and the power of youth while (as stated in our own mission) helping to strengthen our communities…one neighborhood at a time.”
The “semester” launched on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 18, 2010) and culminates on Global Youth Service Day (April 23 - 25, 2010) with student demonstrations and projects across the nation. New Jersey After 3 will serve to coordinate these activities across the state.
